The Ancient & Royal Spread Eagle Pub Golf Club

A&RSE PGC Home Page

This website is dedicated to the ancient game of ‘Pub Golf’. This is not to be confused with the more recent and popular derivation played with sticks and balls, namely ‘Golf’, but is instead the time-honoured ‘Pub Golf’, played in one form or another over many millennia - indeed since the dawn of fermentation itself. ‘Pub Golf’ is a game invented by young people of a bygone era, for the purposes of socialisation and informal competition, in pleasant establishments of imbibification while getting incapacitatedly drunk. ‘Golf’ on the other hand was invented by a bunch of Sweaties.

The Committee

The 2¼-Gallon Compensation Committee (The 2¼ GCC), hereafter referred to as “The Committee”, is a non-elected body made up only of the participants of the inaugural “Ancient & Royal Spread Eagle Invitational Challenge Cup” (A.R.S.E.I.C.C.) competition. The Committee oversees the publication of rules and running of competitions.  These rules are subject to continual revision by the Committee, and can be changed at any time until the commencement of a game. Suggestions for changes to the rules can be made at any time to members of the Committee. Decisions by the Committee are made on the sound basis of whimsical notion and are subject to a rigorous and deeply secret decision screening process (i.e. unanimous verdict).

Excerpt from "The Laws of Pub Golf - 2nd Edition"

At the Hole

A hole typically should be played in the following manner.  The player whose shot it is adopts the correct Stance.  He then Addresses the Glass, before Teeing Off.  Following his first visit, assuming he has not finished the pint in one (a hole in one), the next player in the order of play takes his shot.  Play continues in this manner until all players have Putted Out.

At any time while the ball is in play, Hazards can be encountered on the course.  It is up to the player landing in the hazard to negotiate it before completing the hole.  Players should avoid Accidental Spillage, Sloppy Play and Nashing whenever possible.

All players must, at all times, carry the correct specified Equipment, or employ a Caddie to carry their equipment for them.

Penalty Strokes

It is possible to incur Penalty Strokes while playing the course.  These additional shots can be added to the score of a player or team under the following circumstances: -

·         Nashing – the individual guilty of Nashing and his team are both penalised an additional 2 shots (+2) at the hole immediately prior to the Nashing incident.

·         When the combined team score is greater than twice the par of the hole, that team will suffer a penalty shot for each shot taken above this total. (see Example 2 above).

·         Splashage – one penalty stroke is added to the score of the individual player.

·         Spillage – the player must replay the hole, and one penalty stroke is added to the resulting individual and team score at that hole.

·         Unsporting behaviour, i.e. deliberate intimidation of another player, will result in two penalty strokes being added to the score of the team of the offending player.
